Best Y-Level to Find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.21+

Diamond ore generation changed significantly with Minecraft 1.18's "Caves and Cliffs" world generation overhaul, and many guides written before that update are now actively wrong. The new system changed both where diamonds generate and how they distribute across the world. Here is what actually works in Minecraft 1.21.
The New Diamond Distribution
In versions 1.18 and later, diamond ore can generate anywhere from Y=-64 (bedrock level) to Y=16. However, the distribution is not uniform — diamond frequency increases the deeper you go. The absolute highest concentration of diamonds occurs at Y=-58 to Y=-64, right above the bedrock layer. This is a dramatic change from the pre-1.18 era when Y=11-12 was the optimal level.
The reasoning is straightforward: the new world generation extended the underground world much deeper (down to Y=-64 instead of Y=0), and the developers chose to keep diamonds rare near the surface and most common deep underground.
Optimal Mining Level
The single best Y-level for strip mining diamonds is Y=-57. At this level you are close enough to maximum diamond concentration without running directly into bedrock, which would force you to tunnel around irregular bedrock formations and slow down your mining speed.
To check your current Y-level, press F3 on Java Edition (or toggle coordinates in Bedrock Edition settings). In the debug screen, look for the "XYZ" coordinates — the middle number is your Y position. Stand in a spot, look at your feet, and the Y shown is the level your feet are on (your head is one block higher).
Strip Mining Strategy
Create a main tunnel at Y=-57 that runs in a straight line as far as you are willing to go. Every 3 blocks along this main tunnel, dig a side branch 20-30 blocks long in both directions. This "branch mining" pattern exposes the maximum number of ore blocks per block mined. Leave exactly 2 blocks between each branch — this means every ore vein of size 3 or larger will be visible from at least one branch without needing additional tunnels.
Bring efficiency-enchanted pickaxes (Efficiency IV or V), a Haste II beacon if you have one, and stone or cobblestone to pillar up over lava lakes you encounter. Diamonds appear in veins of 1-10 blocks, and finding your first vein is much faster at Y=-57 than at the old Y=12.
